Gray Reed Helps Secure $506 Million Verdict for PanOptis in Patent Infringement Case Against Apple

On Tuesday, August 11, Gray Reed clients Optis Wireless Technology, LLC, Unwired Planet LLC, and PanOptis Patent Management LLC (collectively, PanOptis) secured a $506 million patent infringement verdict against Apple. PanOptis was represented by Gray Reed attorneys Eric TautfestJared HogganDavid DeZernJill Bindler and David Lisch, who all served as litigation counsel, as well as co-counsel at McKool Smith and Irell & Manella.

Following a seven-day jury trial, the country's first in-person jury trial over patents since the COVID-19 pandemic led to nationwide court closures, jurors awarded PanOptis $506.2 million in damages finding that Apple willfully infringed five PanOptis patents, including U.S. Patent Nos. 8,019,332; 8,385,284; 8,411,557; 9,001,774; and 8,102,833 and further found Apple failed to prove any of PanOptis' challenged patent claims are invalid. All of the infringed patents are essential to the 4G LTE standard.

“We are pleased that our client’s valuable patent rights have been vindicated again, and we are grateful for all the effort put into this case by the Court, the jury and our co-counsel, particularly under the circumstances of the pandemic,” Tautfest said.

The case is Optis Wireless Technology LLC et al. v. Apple Inc., case number 2:19-cv-00066, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
