Gray Reed Partner Receives DEI Award from State Bar of Texas Bankruptcy Law Section
Gray Reed Corporate Restructuring & Bankruptcy Partner Amber Carson received the inaugural Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Award from the Bankruptcy Law Section (BLS) of the State Bar of Texas at the Texas Bankruptcy Bench Bar Conference on June 6, 2023.
This recognition is awarded every two years and is presented to an attorney who has made significant contributions in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, impartiality and fairness in the profession and/or in furthering opportunities within the profession for persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ individuals, and/or persons with differing abilities, thereby enabling such individuals to more fully access resources for advancement in their profession and the community at large.
Along with leading the Pipeline Programs Subcommittee for the Bankruptcy Law Section’s DEI Committee, Carson created the annual BLS Diversity Scholarship in 2021, which is awarded to a 2L or 3L law student who is (a) committed to pursuing a career in the bankruptcy/insolvency field in Texas and (b)(i) from a diverse background, including marginalized or underserved populations or geographic regions or (ii) committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. BLS Diversity Scholarship winners receive a cash scholarship and free admission to the Jay L. Westbrook Bankruptcy Conference and the Texas Bankruptcy Bench Bar Conference. Carson also leads the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Training Programs, Accessibility, and Gender-Terminology Subcommittee of the ABI’s Diversity & Inclusion Working Group and serves on Gray Reed’s DEI Committee.
“I am honored to receive this recognition,” Carson says. “The goal of the BLS Diversity Scholarship is to create meaningful opportunities for talented individuals to build a valuable network and thrive in bankruptcy practice. I’m grateful for the opportunity to play a role in effecting positive change in the lives of these students and positively impact the diversity, equity and inclusion in our field.”
At Gray Reed, Carson represents debtors, creditors, official committees, trustees and other parties in interest in all facets of bankruptcy, creditors’ rights and federal bankruptcy-related litigation matters. She has guided clients in many different industries, including healthcare, retail, construction, oil and gas, restaurant and manufacturing to successful outcomes in many courts in Texas and across the country.
