Derek Younkers
Associate

The quick solution is not always the best lasting solution. When handling a client problem, I work meticulously to find the best solution that assists the client in the present, while maintaining focus upon the client's long-term goals.

Derek Younkers is an associate in Gray Reed’s Controversies Department, where he represents clients in complex commercial disputes, appeals and white-collar defense matters. With strong analytical skills and a record of achieving meaningful results early in his career, Derek brings focused, detail-oriented advocacy to every engagement.

Derek joined Gray Reed in 2025 after serving as a summer associate in 2023 and 2024. During that time, he worked closely with the firm’s litigators on commercial and employment matters, building a strong foundation in complex civil litigation strategy. Since joining the firm as an associate, Derek has expanded his practice to include appellate matters and federal criminal defense.

Derek played a key role in securing a $1.6 million judgment for a client in a contested business dispute. He also assisted in obtaining the dismissal of a federal criminal matter, demonstrating his capabilities in white-collar defense and government investigations.

Derek is particularly proud of his pro bono work. He recently represented a small business owner facing financial ruin because of a frivolous lawsuit. Derek secured a full dismissal of the case and recovered sanctions against the plaintiff. The result allowed him to use his skills and experience to help someone who had nowhere else to turn.

Before joining Gray Reed, Derek attended Baylor University School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and served as managing executive editor of the Baylor Law Review. He also competed in moot court competitions, developing the appellate advocacy skills he now brings to the courtroom on behalf of the firm’s clients.
