Gray Reed Helps Secure Important Verdict for PanOptis in Patent Infringement Case Against Huawei

On Monday, August 27, Gray Reed clients Optis Wireless Technology, LLC, Optis Cellular Technology, LLC, and PanOptis Patent Management LLC (collectively, PanOptis) secured a $10,553,565 patent infringement verdict  against Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Huawei Device USA, Inc. (collectively, Huawei). PanOptis was represented by Gray Reed attorneys Eric Tautfest, Jared Hoggan, David DeZern, Jill Bindler and David Lisch, as well as co-counsel at McKool Smith.

Following a four-day jury trial and two days of deliberations, jurors awarded PanOptis $10.6 million in damages finding that Huawei willfully infringed five PanOptis patents, including U.S. Patent Nos. 7,769,238; 6,604,216; 7,940,851; 8,385,284; and 8,208,569, and further found for PanOptis on the issue of validity for all patents. Four of the infringed patents are essential to the 4G LTE standard, while the fifth patent relates to video-coding technology.

“The jury worked diligently to understand the complexities of the case and the technologies involved in the suit,” Tautfest said.  “Our client is pleased with the jury’s verdict.”

The case is Optis Wireless Technology, LLC et al v. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. et al, case number 2:17-CV-123, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas Marshall Division.
