Jack Emmott Discusses the Value of Collaborative Law

Houston Business Journal
September 18, 2009

Jack Emmott, a Member at Gray Reed & McGraw, was interviewed by the Houston Business Journal as he discusses collaborative law as an option for couples seeking a divorce. In collaborative law, couples mutually agree to voluntary disclosure of relevant information, which is much faster and less expensive than formal discovery. Financial advisers and communications coaches help couples find mutual grounds for what they want out of the divorce, and the lawyers and advisors try to make sure both parties leave happy.

“In court you think like a warrior,” says Emmott. “When you’re in collaborative, you really think like a peacemaker.” Emmott, who is also chair of the Houston Bar Association’s collaborative law section, says a divorce can be resolved in four to six meetings held in law offices or neutral sites instead of a courtroom.
